EARLY CALIFORNIA SCULPTURES
"The Ranchero" was the owner of a rancho in Spanish California. He is riding the first western saddle derived from the Spanish war saddle by adding a horn to use in roping. Note the sundial tapaderos on the stirrups to protect the rider in heavy brush. "Early Californio"- The first American working cowboy (circa 1780) training a horse using a hackamore and the first bit. Note the two reins. "The Standing Californio" has his hair covered with a bandana that is knotted in back. Another bandana is around his neck to pull up over his nose and mouth to protect from dust. He has a knife shoved in his leggings just below the silver buttons. He is carrying a saddle, rope and bit. |
